The Boston Celtics have started to clear space to sign prized forward Gordon Hayward, waiving center Jordan Mickey today prior to his July 15 guarantee deadline, saving $1.47 million in the process, according to Kurt Helin of NBC Sports.
A second-round pick in 2015, Mickey was expecting this move and purposely asked not to play with the team's Summer League roster in Utah or Las Vegas, in order to train on his own.
This move proved to be a rather questionable one, given how big of a platform the Summer League has been to scout good talent — with many positive stories coming out from there in past offseasons.
Mickey played in 41 combined games for the team throughout two seasons, but his floor time severely shrunk last year.
The big man could get a training camp invite from an NBA team in need, get an offer from a team from overseas, or make use of the newly-established G-League in hopes to get back to an NBA roster.
