Kevin Durant told Toronto Raptors big man Serge Ibaka on his cooking show that he picked the Brooklyn Nets over the New York Knicks in free agency because Brooklyn was “farther along in the process of being a contender.”
A lot of Knicks fans are upset at Durant and Kyrie Irving for signing with the Nets over the Knicks. The two-time Finals MVP went on the All The Smoke Podcast with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson to talk about it:

When we came here last year, they had the billboards up and somebody asked me about it and I wasn’t too excited about it because I didn’t like it. It wasn’t like I had something against the Knicks. I just didn’t like all that attention when I was playing for another team. I never really was big on that New York thing. It was just everybody else.”
The Nets made the playoffs last season and have a good core and infrastructure. The Knicks, meanwhile, had the worst record in the NBA in 2018-19 and have been a walking disaster under owner James Dolan for years.
Anyone with a brain can see why Durant and Irving joined the Nets over the Knicks. New York fans are just desperate for something good to happen to their franchise after almost a decade of dysfunction and losing.
A 10-time All-Star and former MVP, Durant has career averages of 27.0 points, 7.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 849 games with the Thunder and Golden State Warriors. The future Hall of Famer is one of the best scorers of all-time and Nets fans can’t wait to see Durant competing with Kyrie Irving by his side at the Barclays Center next season in Brooklyn, with a team having a chance to remake itself in pursuit of realistically lofty goals.
