Though he already draws some of the most hate in the league, Brooklyn Nets star forward Kevin Durant continues to be bold with his presence in the public eye, as he signed a partnership with Weedmaps on Thursday, according to a report from ESPN's Brian Windhorst:

Durant's goal in his partnership is to give exposure and publicly advocate for the use of marijuana primarily as a means to help athletes with their mental health.

ā€œI think it's far past time to address the stigmas around cannabis that still exist in the sports world as well as globally,ā€ Durant told ESPN. ā€œThis partnership is going to help us continue to normalize those conversations, as well as create content, events, and a lot more through our Boardroom media network. This is just the beginning for us.ā€

Weedmaps as an organization doesn't sell cannabis directly; rather, they help users of site find reliable and safe dispensaries in their area in order to facilitate a market that is responsible and helps consumers as much as possible.

The NBA currently forbids players from ingesting marijuana in any form, by rule. However, the league has not tested players for marijuana usage since the start of the Orlando bubble play back in 2020, and it remains to be seen whether or not they will continue to be lenient on the more recreational drug.

As for Kevin Durant, he will keep on pushing for the destigmatization of marijuana in the public space. According to ESPN, KD intends to roll out podcasts and videos in the near future via his Boardroom media banner.Ā Being the superstar that he is, Durant's actions could certainly spark similar change across the league.

For better or for worse, it certainly looks like the NBA is headed towards being more inclusive towards recreational marijuana use.
