In his first season back from an Achilles tear, Kevin Durant of the Brooklyn Nets is expected to be a “key role player” by an analytic sports website. The analysts were probably on something as Durant is nowhere near a role player. In fact, he's still considered one of the best talents in the NBA and was even selected captain of the upcoming NBA All-Star game.
A graph of FiveThirtyEight forecasts a constant decline in Durant's market value. They probably thought that KD's Achilles tear would ruin his career for good. They seem to have underestimated the former NBA MVP and two-time champion.

In terms of skill, the 32-year-old Durant is still considered the most potent offensive player out there. So far, he's averaging 29.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per outing. He has missed some games due to the NBA's COVID-19 protocols as well as some minor injuries. But almost all are in agreement, except maybe FiveThirtyEight, that Durant is well within his prime.
In fact, Kevin Durant may be on his way to capturing his third ring. With Kyrie Irving, James Harden, and a solid core by his side, things are looking well for the Nets. FiveThirtyEight may need to reevaluate their methods if they don't want to lose credibility.
