It's hard to deny that right now, the Brooklyn Nets are looking like the heavy favorite to lift the title at the end of this season. Their mid-season moves all but guarantees that at the very least, this team is going to be competing in the Finals this term. If you ask Nets head coach Steve Nash, however, he knows that in the NBA, nothing is set in stone.

Talking about his team's championship aspirations this season, Nash acknowledged that he believes that the front office has done a tremendous job in ensuring that the Nets will be in the best position to compete for a title. Nevertheless, Nash is adamant that nothing is certain at this point:

“That’s the idea of this league, is to try to put together the best team you can put together,” he said, via Kristian Winfield of the New York Daily News. “And that doesn’t guarantee you anything.”

Nash is digging from experience for this one, as the former back-to-back league MVP recalled his forgettable run with the Los Angeles Lakers nearly a decade ago. After spending 10 memorable seasons with the Phoenix Suns, Nash joined the Lakers in 2012 to team up with Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, and fellow new recruit Dwight Howard. The Lakers were a powerhouse side and many expected them to go all the way to win the chip that year.

That never came to fruition and Nash's time with the Lakers ended up being a bit of a sour patch in an otherwise stellar career. He looks back at that experience to argue his point about the Nets' title odds this season:

“You never know what’s around the corner. And there was a few of us, maybe more than a few of us in that Lakers team, that were on the wrong side of the hill, so to speak,” Nash said. “And so although it looked at the outset like this is going to be magical, it just never transpired. So nothing’s set in stone.”

Fair point from Nash here — especially considering how it came from his own personal experience as a player. Nevertheless, this does nothing to relieve the pressure from a Brooklyn side that will have to live up to some lofty expectations this season, and beyond. By the looks of it, though, this team has what it takes to do so.
