Brooklyn Nets point guard D'Angelo Russell showed some promise early in the season before getting hurt and subsequently having arthroscopic knee surgery in mid-November.

Russell, who the Los Angeles Lakers traded away to make room for Lonzo Ball, has recently returned to the Nets — albeit with the team's G League affiliate — and looks to return soon. In his absence, Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson said Russell used the time off not only to rehab his knee but also to improve other aspects of his physical condition, per Brian Lewis of the New York Post.

“We used this time not only to rehab the knee but to improve his strength, an area of improvement for him,” Atkinson said. “That’s what I told D’Angelo. In a weird way, this has been an opportunity to focus on his body. They had him on a very regimented schedule, not one hour a day, not two-hour days, but four, five hours a day of treatment and correctives and weight lifting. In a weird way, it’s got him on a great schedule, and at his age, it could turn out to be a good thing in terms of development and establishing his habits.”

With such a long time out of basketball action, Russell had to make sure he didn't lose too much for when he came back. With a knee injury, that's often difficult.

But it appears that Russell has taken advantage of the time off in a good way and that he'll get back into the swing of things sooner rather than later one he rejoins the Nets.
