The Brooklyn Nets will have a tricky situation on their hands next season regarding the future of their young center Jarrett Allen. The 6-foot-11 slotman is still in contract up until 2021-22, but he is eligible for an extension this season.
Judging by the 22-year-old's performance in his third year, Allen is bound for a big payday in Brooklyn or someplace else.
Now, according to former Nets assistant GM Bobby Marks, Allen will be seeking somewhere close to a $90 million deal.
“He’s looking for a Clint Capela-type of money,” Marks said of Allen's possible asking price in an appearance on the Hoop Collective podcast with ESPN's Brian Windhorst (via SB Nation).
Jarrett Allen and Clint Capela, of course, do boast a lot of similarities in their game. They are athletic and traditional centers who cannot shoot outside the perimeter but provide elite rim protection and consistent rebounding. Capela was producing slightly better numbers than Allen has around the time the Houston Rockets gave him that lucrative five-year deal in 2018.
A lot of teams, however, would certainly break the bank for a youthful guy like Allen who can give them an inside presence right away.
The former Texas Longhorn didn't exactly stand out in the regular season for the Nets. But given Brooklyn's lack of talent inside the bubble, Allen prospered and notched strong double-doubles of 15.7 points and 11.0 rebounds, along with a surprising 4.2 assists and 1.2 rejections.
The Nets were expectedly swept by the Toronto Raptors in the first round, but Allen was a bright spot after tallying 14.8 boards (the highest in the NBA playoffs) in four games. The team is expected to be instant contenders next season, with superstars Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant back from their respective injuries.
Allen's name has even been linked to several potential deals in a bid to give Brooklyn its third All-Star.
