The Dallas Mavericks officially announced the team's acquisition of former Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson on Saturday. The deal ended up being a six-team trade between the Mavs, Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Charlotte Hornets, and Denver Nuggets, via Mavs PR on X (formerly Twitter). It becomes the first six-team trade in NBA history.
The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have acquired 5-time All-Star Klay Thompson and a future 2nd-round pick as part of a six-team sign-and-trade deal in exchange for Josh Green and a future 2nd-round pick.

The Mavs also announced that Thompson, who formerly wore No. 11 in Golden State, will wear No. 31 in Dallas. Kyrie Irving wears No. 11 for the Mavs so Thompson made the move to change his jersey number.
The deal was previously reported but became official on Saturday. Dallas was looking to add another scoring threat and ultimately accomplished the goal by acquiring the four-time champion. The Mavs also officially announced the Naji Marshall signing and Tim Hardaway Jr.-Quentin Grimes trade on Saturday.
Klay Thompson officially joining Mavericks
Thompson is set to wear No. 31 for a Mavericks team that fell just short of a championship in 2023-24. The veteran guard is going to bring no shortage of experience at the very least. Dallas clearly still has belief in his ability on the floor as well.
“We’re thrilled to have Klay join us in Dallas,” Mavericks president of basketball operations and general manager Nico Harrison said in a statement. “As one of the league’s greatest shooters who competes on both ends, we feel Klay is a perfect fit for our team. He adds a strong, experienced veteran voice that will help us continue to build on the success we’ve seen in recent years.
“Klay’s championship experience, clutch performances and calm demeanor under pressure exemplify what it takes to win in the NBA at the highest level. He will help us continue to grow towards our goal of winning another championship.”
Thompson, 34, played a pivotal role in Golden State's four championships during his time with the team. He also established himself as one of the greatest three-point shooters of all-time while playing alongside Stephen Curry with the Warriors.

In 2023-24, Thompson endured a down year by his standards but still recorded respectable results. He averaged 17.9 points per game on 43.2 percent field goal and 38.7 percent three-point shooting. Thompson also led the league with a 92.7 free throw percentage.
Will Mavs make any more moves?
Dallas has already had a busy offseason. They have made a number of significant changes to the roster, with Thompson being the standout addition thus far.
The Mavs could look to add another player or two before the beginning of the regular season. Dallas wants to take a step forward and win a championship after falling just three wins short of an NBA Finals victory in 2023-24.
The Mavericks likely won't add another star, but anything is possible. At this point in the offseason, the team will focus on its depth in an effort to complete the roster.
The NBA Summer League will also provide Dallas with an opportunity to monitor the progress of the team's younger players. The Mavs recently announced the NBA Sumer League roster, as Olivier-Maxence Prosper and AJ Lawson lead the way.

Dallas is confident in the team's future. It will be interesting to see what other moves they make as the offseason continues.
