Dallas Mavericks GM Nico Harrison reflected on the 2024-25 regular season, including the latest injury updates on Anthony Davis and Dereck Lively II. After Harrison addressed the backlash from trading Luka Doncic, he revealed the approach for Davis and Lively II’s respective recovery.

Harrison says Davis, who suffered a left adductor strain, won’t need surgery during the offseason, per ClutchPoints’ Joey Misterra.

“Nico Harrison says Anthony Davis won’t need surgery this summer,” Misterra reported.

Then, Harrison delivered the same good news for Lively II, not having to go under the knife.

“Harrison also isn’t expecting Dereck Lively II to need surgery,” Misterra added.

The Mavericks GM is optimistic about his team’s future. In the wake of the Doncic trade and devastating injuries to Davis, Lively II, and Kyrie Irving, who underwent successful surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee, many wonder if Harrison’s days are numbered. However, Harrison says his relationship with Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont has improved since the Doncic trade.

Harrison says his relationship with the Mavs’ owner has “strengthened” since the deal, per Marc Stein.

“GM Nico Harrison says his relationship with Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont has actually been ‘strengthened’ over the past two-plus months despite the tremendously negative reaction to the trade of Luka Dončić,” Harrison said via Marc Stein on X, formerly Twitter.

Nico Harrison’s response to whether Mavericks should fire him

When a reporter asked whether Mavericks GM Nico Harrison should be fired, the Mavericks GM defended himself and his relationship with the team owner, Patrick Dumont.

Harrison says the Mavericks will be in position to compete for a championship in 2025-26.

“Well, one, I think I’ve done a really good job here, and I don’t think I can be judged by the injuries this year,” Harrison said. “You have to judge from totality from beginning to end. I think I have a really good working relationship with Patrick [Dumont]. I think you add in Rick [Welts], the leadership that we have is really elite. You’ll see when your team comes back that we’re going to be competing for a championship.”

While injuries are out of one’s control, the devastating effects of the Mavs’ trade of their franchise player couldn’t have come at a worse time. Anthony Davis suffered the injury during his debut with the Mavericks. Then, Kyrie Irving’s ACL injury ended his season, and Dereck Lively II was the third starter plagued by an injury in the second half of the regular season.
