The Stephen Curry-Seth Curry storyline for this season's 3-Point Contest at All-Star Weekend just took a major backseat.
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki has accepted an invitation to participate in the shootout.
This will mark Nowitzki's sixth time participating in the event. He last took part all the way back in 2008 and won the contest once, taking home top honors in 2006.
Of course, Nowitzki is retiring at year's end, so this is his opportunity to end things with a dramatic sendoff.
It's not like Dirk is being invited due to his marksmanship this season. In 17 games on the 2018-19 campaign, Nowitzki is shooting just 25.5 percent from three-point range, having made just 12 triples.
The 40-year-old is averaging just 3.5 points and 1.8 rebounds over 10 minutes a night, making 29.2 percent of his field-goal attempts.
Article Continues BelowNowitzki is a lifetime 38.2 percent long-distance shooter and has shot over 40 percent from beyond the arc four times throughout his 21-year NBA career, last accomplishing the feat during the 2012-13 campaign when he made 41.4 percent of his treys.
The seven-footer, who came over to the NBA from Germany, was originally selected by the Milwaukee Bucks with the ninth overall pick of the 1998 NBA Draft but was immediately traded to the Mavericks for the late Robert “Tractor” Traylor.
It didn't take long for Dirk to show his ability to stroke the three-ball, as he hit on 37.9 percent of his long-range attempts during his second season.
Nowitzki has made 13 All-Star teams and has an MVP and a Finals MVP under his belt.
