Just like the rest of the Dallas Mavericks fanbase, Luka Doncic learned about the Kristaps Porzingis trade to the Washington Wizards online. In fact, he didn't know it happened when he took a nap in the afternoon of the trade deadline.

In his recent one-on-one interview with Malika Andrews of ESPN, Doncic admitted his surprise to the development, hinting he had no idea it would go down to that.

“It was surprising. I was actually taking a nap and I woke up and saw KP was traded,” Doncic shared.

To recall, the Mavs traded Kristaps Porzingis and a second-round pick to the Wizards at the trade deadline in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans. In the wake of the deal, Luka Doncic showed his appreciation for his former star teammate and highlighted just how it didn't work out for them given the injuries to KP–which the Slovenian reiterated in his latest talk with Andrews.

“Obviously, we’re going to miss KP,” Doncic shared following the trade. “We were building something great here. It didn’t obviously work out. I wish him the best, and we’ve got two new guys who are welcome. Bertans is a great shooter. Dinwiddie can put the ball on the floor and he can score. The NBA is a business.

“He went through a lot with the injuries. I think this year, he was way better. Like I said, the NBA is a business, and I wish him the best in the future.”

The Mavs are now moving on without KP, giving Luka all the keys to the Mavs' offense while getting their new additions in Dinwiddie and Bertans acclimated. While many think Dallas made a mistake giving away their “second star,” it is worth noting that Doncic has been thriving over the past few weeks and has actually made huge strides when it comes to his on-court performance.

Dallas has won seven of its last 10 games, including an incredible 21-point comeback led by Doncic and Dinwiddie against the Golden State Warriors on Sunday. The team now has a firm grasp of the fifth seed, with a comfortable four-game lead over the sixth-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves.
