When the Detroit Pistons won the NBA Draft Lottery, it became a foregone conclusion to some that Cade Cunningham would be the easy selection at No. 1. It won't be that easy for the Pistons though despite the fact that Cunningham could still very likely be the pick.

There are a few prospects in this draft that are labeled as “franchise altering player” heading into it. Usually a couple who aren't labeled as such will emerge to become just that but along with Cunningham, Evan Mobley, Jalen Green and Jalen Suggs fall into that category.

Drafting Cunningham may still be the move for the Pistons at the end of the day. However, here are three reasons Evan Mobley would be a perfect fit for the Pistons in the 2021 NBA Draft.

Killian Hayes can stay at his natural position

Taking Cade Cunningham could set off a chain reaction on the roster for the Pistons.

Last year, they took Killian Hayes, another point guard, with the No. 7 overall pick. Hayes had a rocky rookie season but much of that was due to a hip injury that kept him out for a long period of time.

There's no reason to believe Hayes can't still be the future franchise point guard, it's still way too early to tell.

If the Pistons were to draft Evan Mobley, it would give Hayes a perfect pick-and-roll partner as the two grow together in Detroit. Mobley still needs to work on extending out his jumper on a consistent basis but that will hopefully come in time.

If the move is to go with Cunningham, the No. 7 pick for the Pistons from last year will likely have to get used to playing off the ball instead of at his normal position.

Now if the Pistons think Cunningham is the clear consensus, can't miss No. 1 pick, then by all means don't worry about Killian Hayes having to position switch and find a new role on this team. But if there's some waffling going on about the decision, drafting Mobley would be a better fit for how the Pistons roster is currently constructed.

The front court would be set with Mobley and Isaiah Stewart

Isaiah Stewart had a phenomenal rookie season for the Pistons. The No. 16 overall pick in 2020 showed his gritty style of play that blended well with the Pistons and he was a force on both ends of the court.

Going with Evan Mobley would solidify and lock in the Pistons' front court for years to come. Mobley can guard most positions and is really good defending off the pick-and-roll. He's a shot blocking machine who guarded the paint as well if not better than any big in college basketball last season.

Having a duo of Mobley and Stewart would provide the Pistons with a lot of flexibility. Mobley could actually slide around defensively while Stewart guards the 5s on the floor. Using Mobley in a variety of ways could be the best recipe in finding what works and what he excels at while settling in at the next level.

A Mobley – Stewart one-two punch would be terrifying for opposing offenses as the two figure to get better and better in the NBA.

Versatile and dynamic 7-footers don't come around every draft

Evan Mobley isn't a polished product, far from it. But his rare combination of supreme athleticism with the ability to shoot and block shots at will all while standing at 7-feet tall is something that doesn't come around every draft class.

This isn't to suggest that there's always a Cade Cunningham or Jalen Suggs in each and every draft, just that the mix that Mobley has is more rare. If the Mobley pick hits, the Pistons will have one of the rarer talents in the league for the next decade plus.

Drafting Mobley will be a move that requires more patience from Pistons fans as it will likely take him longer to fine tune his craft and develop his game but it's not as though Detroit is this No. 1 pick away from contending in 2021. It's a long play here for the Pistons and drafting Mobley with his unique size and skillset could be the right move at the end of the day. He's a perfect fit on most rosters.

Cade Cunningham may be the can't miss pick for the Pistons at No. 1 overall when all is said and done on draft night. If that's the case, certainly nobody will blame Detroit for making that pick. It isn't as easy of a decision as initially thought though. Evan Mobley, with his size, and Killian Hayes being the young point guard for the Pistons right now, would provide a perfect fit in Detroit for years to come.
