After being part of two trades, Golden State Warriors point guard D’Angelo Russell says he’s learning a lot about the business side of the NBA and how to remain professional through it all.
Russell will be playing for his third team in five years next season. The new Warriors guard played two seasons each with the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets.
“Yeah. I mean, either you’re a part of the business, or you’re sitting back and you’re not a part of it,” Russell told GQ. “Every year, you have to gauge if you’re a part of the business, trades, contract extensions, or if you can be a guy who’s locked into a contract and not have to worry about it, can really sleep at night. That’s the main focus, I would say, just trying to see where you are, [and to] be honest with yourself. Are you a guy that’s gonna go through this in a way that you can’t control, or are you gonna be a guy who’s controlling the whole situation?”
D’Angelo Russell was the second overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. The lefty has matured since that infamous Nick Young incident and turned himself into an All-Star in the NBA.

After having his breakout year last season with the Nets, Russell thought he was going to stay in Brooklyn for the long-haul, but the Nets signed star point guard Kyrie Irving in free agency.
The Nets and Warriors agreed to a sign-and-trade deal involving two-time Finals MVP Kevin Durant which sent Russell to Golden State and KD to Brooklyn.
He’s only 23, but Russell has been traded two times already, so he’s getting used to the business side of the league. Russell signed a four-year, $117 million contract with the Warriors this summer. He will start alongside two-time MVP Stephen Curry next season in the backcourt for the Dubs.
