Golden State Warriors big man DeMarcus Cousins will participate in some non-contact drills during training camp as he continues to recover from his Achilles injury.

Warriors general manager Bob Myers says Cousins is on schedule with his rehab and that the team is not saving Cousins just for the Western Conference playoffs.

DeMarcus Cousins tore his left Achilles tendon in January. Before getting injured, Cousins was averaging 25.2 points and 12.9 rebounds in 48 games while shooting 47.0 percent from the field and 35.4 percent from 3 with the New Orleans Pelicans.

A four-time All-Star, Cousins turned down an extension from the Pelicans before the season ended and didn’t receive any offers once free agency started. So, he decided to give the Warriors a call. Golden State was actually shocked when Cousins contacted them expressing interest in joining their already stacked roster. Myers even told Cousins’ agent the team couldn’t afford Cousins and was looking to add more wing depth instead of a center.

But Cousins agreed to take the taxpayer mid-level exception which the Warriors offered and the sides agreed to a one-year deal.

Once Cousins suits up, the Warriors' starting lineup will feature five players who have been to multiple All-Star games. Cousins has the luxury of being able to take his time with his recovery since Golden State doesn’t need his services that urgently.
