Donte DiVincenzo essentially had his pick of free agency destinations. What team in the league wouldn't want a proven two-way guard with obvious room to grow on a contract worth less than the taxpayer mid-level exception? DiVincenzo chose to sign with the Golden State Warriors, though, filling a void on the roster left after Gary Payton II's departure.
Speaking with reporters at Las Vegas Summer League, the fourth-year guard revealed how conversations with Steph Curry and Draymond Green sealed his decision to join the defending champions.
“I had a good conversation with Steph and Draymond. They saw what I wanted, and it's a perfect fit,” DiVincenzo said. “Culture, environment. I think for me, when I was at Villanova going back to college and then in Milwaukee especially, just the way things were done, how every day-to-day stuff was. Everything they were saying had already happened to me, so it was a good feeling and kinda familiar feeling with what they were talking about.”

It's not just Golden State's culture of hard work and selflessness that resonated with DiVincenzo, though.
A canny cutter, quick decision-maker and solid spot-up shooter, he's looking forward to functioning in the Warriors' egalitarian offensive attack.

“I just love much the ball moves, honestly,” DiVincenzo said. “You have three future Hall-of-Famers on the court, to be honest with you, and they're not trying to seek their own points, their own shots. Everybody's getting touches, everybody's getting open looks. I think the greatest thing is when you watch it, they want everybody else to succeed as well. I think that's contagious, and you want to be a part of that.”
DiVincenzo isn't Payton. Though a solid defender on and off the ball, he's hardly at Payton's all-world level on that end, and lacks the length and top-tier explosiveness that allowed Young Glove to function like a high-flying big man around the rim.
But DiVincenzo should prove a seamless fit with the Warriors in 2022-23 regardless, hopefully riding his impact during another deep Golden State playoff run to a lucrative, long-term deal in free agency this time next year—just like Payton.
