Kevin Durant just put up a perfect performance at the free-throw line, going a spiffy clean 13-of-13 from the stripe as part of a rousing 49-point performance to lift the Golden State Warriors from a 17-point halftime deficit against the Orlando Magic.
The back-to-back Finals MVP has now made 29 of his last 30 free-throw attempts — only going back the last two games. He was asked if this was a concerted effort to get to the line, after only getting there a combined nine times in losses to the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder.
“Nah, I'm just playing the game, if I see a matchup and I see no help, I'm gonna try to get there,” said Durant. “I'm not really thinking about ‘I gotta score free throws.' I just come to the game thinking about making every shot I shoot.”

Asked if he knew what his free-throw percentage was, Durant was spot-on, guessing right at 93 percent for the season. He has attempted the second-most free throws this season (173), trailing Sixers big man Joel Embiid by a whopping 62 foul shot attempts, yet he's the only player to have attempted 100 or more free throws and hit it at a 90 percent clip or above.
Durant is also second in free throws made (161), missing only 12 times from the foul line in 22 games this season. While it might take a few months to shake out the likes of Malcolm Brogdon (34-of-35) and Jeff Green (38-of-40) from the leaderboards — which will be based on a minimum number of free throws attempted in the season — the 30-year-old seems well underway for a career year at the foul line.
Kevin Durant has reached the 90 percent mark for a season only twice in his NBA career — the first during the 2009-10 season and the second in 2012-13, which made him part of the elusive 50-40-90 club alongside Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki and now teammate Stephen Curry.
