Klay Thompson isn't often one to meddle in others players' free-agent decisions, but the perennial sharpshooter told former teammate Kevin Durant that the Golden State Warriors had the potential of being the greatest dynasty to ever exist before the two hit free agency:
“I mostly just let him be, but I told him we could have the greatest dynasty ever,” Thompson told Mark Medina of USA TODAY Sports about his interaction with Durant.
Durant seemed to have his mind made up, as his decision to sign with the Brooklyn Nets was reported hours before the official start of free agency. However, the marksman isn't holding grudges for Durant's choice after three seasons with the Warriors:
Article Continues Below“A change of heart, man. But I’m never going to hold it against him,” Thompson said of Durant’s free-agency decision. “He wanted to go to New York City. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
Durant's exit would result in a wave of mutilation in Golden State, a restructuring of their roster after executing a sign-and-trade to reel in recently minted All-Star D'Angelo Russell. This move instigated the trade of Andre Iguodala and the eventual retirement of Shaun Livingston after being waived, along with the acquisition of several others to fill in the empty roster spots.
Thompson remains the biggest key among them, as it will be his health and participation that will elevate or weigh down the Warriors' playoff chances, along with their overall success in the upcoming 2019-20 season.
