Klay Thompson played a pivotal role in perhaps the most exciting three-point contest in the history of All-Star weekend. The Golden State Warriors marksman advanced to the final round of the event back in 2015, joining teammate Stephen Curry and then Cleveland Cavaliers star Kyrie Irving in a shootout for the ages. It was Curry who emerged victorious, though, putting on a show by, at one point, draining 13 consecutive triples en route to a winning score of 27 points.
But Thompson would eventually get the last laugh. The Splash Brothers met in the finals one year later, too, with Thompson taking home the trophy after equaling Curry's impressive point total from the previous event. With Curry set to participate in the three-point contest again in his hometown of Charlotte, many wondered whether Thompson would join the fray, setting the stage for a best-of-three between two of the greatest shooters of all time.
No dice, though. Thompson told Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports on Saturday that he's decided against going shot for shot with Curry and the rest this time around.

Thompson, 28, missed the Warriors' streak-breaking loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday with an undisclosed illness. He's expected to play in Saturday night's showcase against the Los Angeles Lakers.
It was somewhat surprising when Thompson was named an All-Star for the fifth consecutive season on Thursday. Though his per-game numbers align with stellar norms of recent years, he's shooting a career-low 37.9 percent from beyond the arc in 2018-19.
Maybe Thompson has chosen not to take part in the three-point contest because he's unable to find his stroke? Hardly. He shot a staggering 47.5 percent from deep in January and finished three games with at least seven triples. The shootout will survive without Thompson, of course, but it sure would take on an extra level of excitement if he was participating.
