The Golden State Warriors are in a spot they probably never experienced in years—the dilemma between building on their youth versus trading their young assets to be a championship contender. It’s been an eerie year, to say the least for the Warriors, who lost their championship aspirations when Klay Thompson ruptured his Achilles before the season even started.

Now that the Warriors are clearly not in contention for a championship, this leads the team front office with one question: Should they trade second pick James Wiseman and their young core?

Perhaps another superstar to maximize Steph Curry’s prime or continue to build their young pieces? Warriors General Manager Bob Myers at least acknowledge the team’s situation and game an honest assessment:

“Yeah, for sure. Believe it or not, we think about these things,” Myers said as reported by The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami. “We’re fully aware of the team we have, the balancing with youth and the veterans, totally aware of where Steph Curry is at in his career. So we balance all that out. The ultimate goal is to win. We want to try to win another championship. We don’t like the team we are now, a .500 team.”

True enough, the Warriors have been really up and down this season. They clearly don’t look like the team that dominated the league for years. They are currently 10th in the Western Conference standings with a record of 23-24. When Curry is removed from the lineup, they sometimes seem like a G-League team.

Warriors Still Trying To Find Out What Players Stick

However, like any other team in the league, this part of the season is when head coach Steve Kerr figures out his rotations. Gone are the days where superstar Kevin Durant is there to make things easy for Kerr. No more Andre Iguodala or Shaun Livingston but enter Wiseman, Jordan Poole, and a set of different players who are still in their youth.

“I didn’t have this idea that it would all go perfect,” Myers said. “We’ve had fits and starts. Steve’s still experimenting. and I don’t blame him, I think it’s the right thing to do with the team like we are, still trying to find the right rotations and the right fit while blending some young guys. We’re messing around and tinkering with the offense a little bit.

What the Warriors want to do, in the future is still unclear but they can certainly still improve their record to go above .500. They have a pretty easy schedule to end the regular season so they can still make that playoff push that they want to do. Will the young core of Wiseman and Poole be around next season? Who knows.

Although one thing’s for sure—the Warriors want to compete for a championship and they will do everything they can to do just that.
