Before he became the Michael Jordan that turned out to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest basketball player to ever play the game, he had started to make a name for himself at the University of North Carolina. His roots in the state grew even more, especially now that he is the owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. That said, he is always trying to find ways to help different communities and make the lives of many better.

In line with that, it has been reported that His Airness recently donated $7 million dollars to have more medical clinics open throughout North Carolina. It is one of the largest sums the NBA legend has given so far, and will definitely improve the health of many of its residents.

His spokeswoman, Estee Portnoy, shared that Jordan is aware of a study that revealed poor children in Charlotte have the worst odds, among other major U.S. cities, to come out of poverty. That was part of the reason she cited, via Deon Roberts and Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer, which prompted Jordan to donate the said amount.

She said Jordan was largely spurred by a 2014 study from Harvard and the University of California at Berkeley that found poor children in Charlotte have the worst odds of those in any big U.S. city to lift themselves out of poverty. That report, which stunned many in the community, led to the creation of a Charlotte-Mecklenburg task force charged with identifying ways to address the city’s economic-mobility problems.

“Michael really wanted to do something personally, he and his family, in the North Carolina area, separate from the work we’ve done with the Hornets,” Portnoy said.

Throughout his illustrious career, Jordan became an inspiration to many and touched so many lives. Now that he is retired, he continues to be an instrument for positive change and with his classy gesture, it could influence other team owners or even players to also give back to their communities and make a difference.
