The Los Angeles Lakers took their first loss of the summer after they were snubbed by Oklahoma City Thunder small forward Paul George. Now it appears their discussions with the San Antonio Spurs for small forward Kawhi Leonard are at a standstill.
The Lakers and Spurs have been negotiating a potential deal for some time now. However, according to Sam Amick of USA Today, both sides are no closer to working out a trade than they were before.

Th news comes as a bit of a blow to Lakers fans. Aside from Leonard's reported interest in joining the team, his acquisition would be vital in the team's pursuit of small forward LeBron James in free agency. Unfortunately, the lack of contact has seemingly opened the door for other teams to get in on the action.
Among them is the Philadelphia 76ers. Not only have they engaged in trade discussions with San Antonio but they have also managed to schedule a meeting with James' representatives. That said, it appears Philadelphia is making a strong push toward disrupting any of L.A.'s presumed plans.
It is easy to see why the Lakers may be hesitant to pull the trigger on a deal. The Spurs have essentially asked for the farm in exchange for Leonard. Although there is plenty of confidence that Los Angeles can re-sign him after next season, trading away nearly the entirety of its young core certainly has its risks. This could be why talks between both teams have slowed down today.
