The Los Angeles Lakers are trying to build a legitimate title contender with their sights set on landing superstar talent in NBA free agency and possibly with a blockbuster trade. The team is reportedly targeting LeBron James and is in talks with San Antonio Spurs to acquire Kawhi Leonard, but they still have to players on their current roster to take care of like rookie Moritz Wagner.

On Sunday, the Lakers signed their first-round draft pick. This was an interesting move considering the team can't include Wagner in any deal for the next 30 days potentially revealing the status of their trade talks to land Leonard. San Antonio is looking for a massive return for Leonard, and the Lakers have been unwilling to send the majority of their young assets to get it done.

As for Wagner, the Michigan product is an ideal addition to this young Lakers roster. The 21-year-old is coming off an impressive campaign with the Wolverines in which he helped led his team to the NCAA Championship game and earned All-Tournament Team honors with 15.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.2 steals per game in the six NCAA Tournament games he played.

Wagner brings the ability to stretch the floor to a team in desperate need of an upgrade in outside shooting. Last season, Wagner shot 39.4 percent from beyond the arc and 52.8 percent from the field for Michigan while averaging a team-high 14.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.

Although it is uncertain what the Lakers will do in free agency this summer, the rookie forward may have an opportunity to earn some minutes next season with his versatility making him an intriguing addition to the squad in Los Angeles.
