The L.A. Clippers are adding another forward to the team. In an announcement released by the Clippers, it was made known that they are acquiring swingman Johnathan Motley along with the rights of guard Renaldas Seibutis via a trade with the Dallas Mavericks.  In return, the Clippers will be sending forward Leunen and some cash to Dallas (h/t Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints).

Motley went undrafted in last year’s NBA Draft, but later inked a two-way deal with the Mavs. That contract allowed Motley to appear in 11 games for Dallas last season, during which he started in four games and averaged 8.7 points and 4.5 rebounds despite a limited playing time of 16.0 minutes per outing. Most of his time during the 2017-18 season was spent in the G League, where he suited up for the Mavs’ affiliate team, the Texas Legends, for 34 games. In 32.8 minutes per game in Legends uniform, Motley managed to score 22.2 points, grab 9.8 rebounds, and swat 1.1 blocks.

Motley is a productive high-energy guy, but his lack of a reliable outside shot sets him back. He shot just 28.0 percent from deep in the G League and went only 1-for-6 from downtown during his short stint with the Mavericks.

One of the little-talked about things in play here is that this is the first ever two-way contract trade in NBA history.

Johnathan Motley will be with the Clippers via a two-way deal, which means he’s going to see action on the court next season with the Agua Caliente Clippers of Ontario. The Clippers are deep in the forward positions with Mike Scott and Luc Mbah a Moute joining the team this summer, so Motley will mostly serve as an insurance in the minors for the team.
