Tyronn Lue has done a phenomenal job in charge of the Los Angeles Clippers across the last few years. While they haven't reached their title aspirations, the organization is making a name for themselves, even when Paul George and Kawhi Leonard aren't on the floor.

Of course, Lue isn't any stranger to coaching on the big stage. He led the Cleveland Cavaliers to the most epic comeback in NBA Finals history in 2016, overcoming a 3-1 deficit against the Golden State Warriors. Problem is, LeBron James gets most of the credit for it, not the Clippers HC, which does bother him.

“LeBron's been in the league, what, 18 years?” Lue says. “He won four championships. So that don't mean you're automatically going to win because you have LeBron James. So I do coach with a chip on my shoulder because, like people say, ‘Oh, he can't do it without LeBron. He can't …'”

Funny enough, the Los Angeles Lakers actually tried to pluck the Clippers boss in 2019, interviewing him for the head coaching job. But, they offered him a deal worth just $18 million across three years, a much lower figure than his deal in Cleveland. Lue saw it as the Lakers taking advantage of him and essentially giving him a chance to coach LeBron again over anything else:

“The Lakers [saw it] more so as like [I'm just] coming to coach LeBron,” Lue said. “No, I'm coming to win. I just didn't think I was treated fairly. And I wasn't just going to accept any offer just to get a job.

“I just thought I was better than that.”

Lue is proving that he can coach at a high level without The King. The Clippers are currently above the Lakers in the standings, despite rolling with six different rotational pieces who are 25 years old or younger. Just like Erik Spoelstra has done in Miami, Ty Lue is coming out of LeBron's shadow.
