The defensive energy of Los Angeles Lakers point guard Lonzo Ball has rubbed off on the lanky Brandon Ingram, who has been inspired by his teammate's effort on the less-lauded end of the court. Ingram, possessing a 6-foot-9 frame and a 7-foot-3 wingspan, is more than capable of using his physical assets as instruments for a strong defender, and Ball's determination has only sparked his desire to clamp down on his opponents.

“I think when you have the point guard guarding someone full court and just chasing the guy all around, always in the right spot, it just makes you want to get down in a stance and be his backup and have his help whenever he needs it,” Ingram told Mike Trudell of Lakers.com. “Or having the same energy that he has. I just try to use my length to the best of my ability.”

Ball is nowhere as physically gifted as Ingram, but he has managed to stay on the floor in large part due to his willingness to guard players at different positions and make plays that can turn the tide of the game. The former second overall pick already possesses a height advantage over most point guards not named Ben Simmons or Shaun Livingston, and he has made the most of it by contesting jump shots and getting into passing lanes to create transition opportunities.

If Ingram can mirror that same desire, he might just be able to salvage a good season, despite clearly struggling to retain the same offensive consistency he enjoyed last season. The youngster is hoping to return to the lineup Friday after an ankle injury.
