After all the good signings the Minnesota Timberwolves have made this summer so far, they have now suffered a setback involving their first round selection in last month’s draft.

According to Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune, 16th overall pick Justin Patton recently broke his left foot during a workout and will not be able to participate in the Summer League. He immediately had surgery to repair his fifth metatarsal bone, which was done in New York.

This is terrible news for the Wolves, who had high hopes for the 20-year-old Creighton product to be a rotation player for them this coming season, and learn from their talented young center, Karl-Anthony Towns. Patton will be sidelined and is now in jeopardy of missing out on his rookie season.

It can be recalled that Philadelphia 76ers forward Ben Simmons suffered a similar injury last summer, which forced him to be on the sidelines this past season. The good news for Patton is that his injury is not career-threatening and he can completely recover from it with extensive rehabilitation and strengthening exercises.

For now, the Timberwolves are expected to rely heavily on Taj Gibson as their primary big man off he bench, as he has the ability to play both the four and five spots.
