The Kobe Bryant era has ended for the Los Angeles Lakers and it’s now time to welcome the new age of Purple and Gold.

Leading the pack of young Lakers is point guard D’Angelo Russell. The second overall pick of last year’s draft has had a rocky start to his career in terms of maturity. The talent is there, no doubt, but the bigger question lies in his capacity to properly focus and carry himself as a professional.

Last season, former coach Byron Scott has called him out for being too immature. He also lost his teammates’ affection after the issue between him and teammate Nick Young.

So, a few months removed from all those concerns, can he take on the mantle from Kobe Bryant as the face of the franchise? Russell may see himself as ready, but one curious fact may tell differently, or it might not mean a thing. From an interview with SLAM Online, the shifty guard revealed that he has not spoken to Bryant since the latter retired.

Whatever that entails or however that came about, the lack of contact, could mean a lot of things. But he’ll certainly have his chance to speak with the Black Mamba once the season gets underway.

However, him being the new top Laker is still up in the air, especially with young talents such as Jordan Clarkson, Julius Randle, and Brandon Ingram playing alongside Russell.
