When the Memphis Grizzlies leapfrogged ahead of many teams in the 2019 NBA Draft lottery to claim the number two overall pick in the draft, many assumed that they would be taking Ja Morant as their pick. While that still might be the case, a new report seems to suggest that the Grizzlies aren’t convinced just yet, and that another player might be in the mix for the number two pick.
In the latest 2019 NBA Mock Draft from Sports Illustrated, Jeremy Woo notes that while he believes the Grizzlies will be selecting Morant, league sources told him that the team hasn’t come to a “firm decision” on the pick. According to Woo, Duke’s R.J. Barrett could still be a candidate for the number two selection, even though he hasn’t worked out for the team.
While Woo notes that Morant is still likely the choice, things could begin shifting over the course of next week. With the draft closing in quickly, it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out, especially when the Grizzlies are still taking calls on veteran point guard Mike Conley.
Thanks to the nature of this upcoming draft, with only a handful of prospects seen as must-have candidates, there looks to be the potential for tons of movement thanks to trades. Teams like the Phoenix Suns and Cleveland Cavaliers have been rumored to wanting to move their picks, and for other teams like the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers, trading their picks to acquire a superstar is on the table.
Needless to say, this might be one of the most hectic NBA Drafts we’ve seen in some time, even if the talent pool isn’t as deep as it has been in recent years.
