The NBA is growing and so is the usage of  data and analytics.

The league provides outlets to fans in the area of analytics and it's collected data more than ever. One example of that obvious shift is the NBA Basketball Analytics Hackathon.

The league is hosting its inaugural hackathon event on  September 24th in New York.

The event opens to current and former college students in the United States, and the chosen applicants will get the opportunity to compete and solve basketball questions with data provided by the league.

NBA Director of Basketball Analytics Jason Rosenfeld spoke about it with Nylon Calculus' Ian Levy.

I don't want to reveal the question but it's going to be around a hot topic in the league, the type of thing that the league office and teams would want to know

Our fans continue to show an increasing level of interest in data and analytics which provides a level of engagement. We think that by bringing together some of the most talented young minds for a full day to build tools and develop solutions in the field of basketball analytics, we can continue to innovate, which is something that the NBA has embraced for a very long time.
