The NBA has provided its Board of Governors a list of key dates for the resumption of the 2019-20 season, as well as the offseason and the start of the 2020-21 season. While many have expected a Christmas Day start for next season, this schedule has a potential start date of Dec. 1 after a Nov. 10 opening of training camp:
Sources: The NBA informed the Board of Governors of scheduled dates:
– Training camp: June 30, July 7 travel to Orlando
– 2019-20 season: July 31
– Free agency: Oct. 18
– 2020-21 targets: Nov. 10 training camp, Dec. 1 opening night (can remain fluid)— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) June 4, 2020
This is notable because an NBA Finals Game 7 for this season is expected to be no later than Oct. 12. This means that if the Finals go a full seven games, the two teams will only have about a month off before training camp.
As noted, these dates are fluid and could change. It would not be a surprise to see the start of next season pushed back a bit, because only a month off between the NBA Finals and training camp is an extremely short amount of time. Other playoff teams would be getting an especially truncated offseason as well.
While a shorter offseason is unavoidable due to these unique circumstances brought about by the coronavirus pandemic, the NBA will have to be careful about condensing the time off too much, though the league will also be considering the 2021-22 season during these conversations. The league will also have to take plenty of safety precautions due to COVID-19. There are still plenty of details to work out, and the NBPA will discuss this plan in a meeting on Friday.
