The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has forced most major sports across the country to either cancel their season or postpone events in some way. The NBA is no different. Heading into the final stretch of their regular season, concerns over COVID-19 and the safety of fans and players forced the league to postpone their season indefinitely in March.
Roughly a month into that postponement, fans across the world are holding onto to hope that the NBA season will soon return. Commissioner Adam Silver has stated that measures are being taken to try and get the league back but even so, fans shouldn't expect to see basketball back when a return is announced.
Per ESPN's Baxter Holmes, many league officials and staff members believe that there will be and needs to be a sort of grace period between when the season is cleared and when games are actually played again.

“‘You'll have [players] from one extreme to the other,' said one athletic training staff official involved with numerous NBA players. ‘So you've sort of just got to go with the mindset, No one's been training how they should be [and] everyone's very out of shape.'”
The NBA playoffs were originally scheduled to start on April 18 and last until June 21. However, with the pandemic pushing things back, an NBA return would likely mean playoff basketball well into the summer.
