It doesn't seem like there is any turning back in the Ben Simmons saga with the Philadelphia 76ers. While the Aussie seeks a trade, there's clearly still one person who firmly believes in his abilities. Former NBA big man Metta Sandiford-Artest. According to him, he believes the disgruntled Sixers star can still be an MVP candidate. And, he hopes it's in Philly. Via TMZ Sports:
“He will be an MVP candidate, he will be second team All-NBA, and he will be a champion. Hopefully in Philly with my good brother Elton Brand. Work it out.”
If only it was that easy, Artest. The Sixers have done everything to get Simmons back on their side, but he's shown absolutely no interest in repairing their relationship. The team even refused to pay him approximately $8 million of his salary on Friday because of his absence from training camp.
Artest's take is certainly bold, but he did make it clear that Simmons doesn't have to be a shooter in order to be a star, comparing that notion to the likes of Jason Kidd and Gary Payton, who weren't exactly top-tier shooters. Artest also had a word of advice for Simmons in regards to staying with the Sixers instead of seeking a trade:

Of course, Simmons was hated on last year in the playoffs after his epic collapse for the Sixers where he shot under 35% from the free-throw line and looked scared to even try and score the rock. But, he's made it known that he wants out. His teammates were even willing to fly to LA and convince him to stay, but Simmons told them to not bother.
There's no doubt he still has loads of potential, though. He's a formidable defender, a solid rebounder, and definitely the Sixers' best playmaker. Maybe he should take Artest's advice and stay put, but it seems unlikely that happens.
