This is a true story. I once had a friend who had a girlfriend. whose mother came in town to visit. He told her that he had to work, and to just enjoy time with her mom. What he didn't tell her was, he was going out on a date with another lady. He took that lady to a Lakers‘ game that night, and some point in time, he spotted his girlfriend and her mom had also come and were seated nearby.

It was great for him still, because she didn't see him, thinking he was working. His fortunes quickly turned, when during a dead ball situation, the arenas kiss cam panned directly on him and the other young lady. It gets worse, because knowing his girlfriend was there with her mom, he refused to kiss the other woman. The crowd boo'd him, his girlfriend spotted him, and the other lady was embarrassed and turned off because he completely blew her off, even though she didn't know the real reason why. That day he lost in a big way as you can imagine.

We laughed about it later, but he knew how badly he messed up at the time.

So that leads to the kiss cam. Is it planned, fake, are those paid actors, is it random? Well in short, it is very much real. What makes it an experience each time is because there are always new people. The teams are involved sometime, so you might see the mascot jump in to bring some laughter to the crowd, but most of the time it really is what you see.

It's very methodical and technically coordinated as to how it happens. The cameras are sure to pan in on ads placed around the arena, ads on props on the floor during time outs, and on the Jumbotron. The arena chooses specific spots to pan the cameras on, and certain sections of people. It's a full production marvel. If you'd like to see how it works behind the scenes, check out this video below.
