New York Knicks head coach David Fizdale is impressed by how the Brooklyn Nets built their roster.

After losing to the crosstown rivals on Sunday, Fizdale talked about what the Knicks organization can learn from their neighbors when it comes to building a roster that is capable of competing in the playoffs and attracting top free agents.

“We have to grow our kids,’’ Fizdale said, per Marc Berman of the New York Post. “That’s the biggest thing. And be patient in free agency. It wasn’t that fast [for the Nets]. They didn’t go to it until the fourth year into it. It’s hard starting from a bunch of young guys.”

Fizdale is referring to the Nets' strategy of building their roster through draft picks and trades. Despite not starting his career with the Nets, Spencer Dinwiddie can be considered a homegrown talent and one of the top bench players in the league today.

Joe Harris, too, did not start his career with the Nets, but the team noticed his shooting ability and traded for him. Now, he's regarded as a rising star in that regard.

Caris LeVert — the 20th overall pick in 2016 (traded to the Nets from the Indiana Pacers) — is one of the young guns on the rise this year. Moreover, Jarrett Allen was picked by Brooklyn and is slowly becoming the team's defensive anchor.

All these draft and trade moves finally translated into success last year when the team qualified for the playoffs. More than catching everyone by surprise, they caught the eyes of star players Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. They now have a complete team — a bunch of skilled role players and two superstars.

Though the Nets are starting off relatively slow thus far, no one is doubting their chances in the long run.

As for the Knicks and Fizdale, if they are to follow the Nets' strategy, then New York fans may have to wait a few more years, with Dennis Smith Jr., RJ Barrett and Kevin Knox needing more time to develop.
