Following an eventful offseason, all 30 teams are heading into training camp in preparation for the 2017-18 NBA season. While Carmelo Anthony's future with the New York Knicks remains uncertain, one storyline that will be revisited is Russell Westbrook's contract extension.

After winning the 2017 Most Valuable Player award, Westbrook has not signed his five-year, $207 million contract extension. Although Westbrook has offered no hints, the Thunder are ‘cautiously optimistic' according to Michael Lee of The Vertical:

Westbrook has offered no hints that he wouldn’t sign the extension and the Thunder remain cautiously optimistic that he will stay. His decision could go a long way toward retaining George, for whom the Los Angeles Lakers have already been levied a $500,000 tampering fine. George’s future will be a season-long topic and Westbrook will also be in that mix unless he ends the suspense before the season begins.

Along with Paul George, Westbrook will become an unrestricted free agent following the season. While the best case scenario is both All-Stars will enjoy playing together and ultimately re-sign with Oklahoma City, there will be numerous factors that could change during the course of the season.

As George has been linked with the Los Angeles Lakers, Westbrook may wait to see how the front office continues to improve the roster before committing himself.
