The Portland Trail Blazers made the decision to split up the franchise's longtime backcourt tandem of CJ McCollum and Damian Lillard at the NBA trade deadline. While McCollum was a fan favorite, the decision to trade him to the New Orleans Pelicans was one that had to be made, especially amid the emergence of Anfernee Simons as a potential star. Simons was asked about his thoughts on the McCollum trade, and what it meant for him, and he gave some candid responses, via Sports Illustrated.

The departure of McCollum did nothing but confirm to Simons that the Blazers have a tremendous amount of faith in him as one of the staples of the future of the backcourt. Of course, seeing a close friend and teammate leave the organization is tough, but that's the nature of the business. And in terms of Simons' career development, the newly-available minutes will go a long way. And he's made the most of his new role, averaging 30.3 points, 6.3 assists, and a staggering 5.8 3-pointers made over his last four games heading into the All-Star break.
This season, Simons is averaging career-highs across the board, including 17.0 points and 3.9 assists. He's knocking down an impressive 3.1 3-point shots per game, at a dazzling 40% clip, flexing his skills as one of the best sharpshooters in the league. With McCollum no longer ahead of him in the Blazers' rotation, Simons is getting plenty of opportunities to shine in Portland.
