San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon continues her quest to land a top tactician position in the NBA. While she was given interviews in the past, she ultimately didn't get the job.

Hammon has already blazed the trail for other female coaches hoping to enter the NBA. But clearly, the dream is to be the head drillmaster of a team and make history. But for the WNBA legend, giving her the role shouldn't be just for the sake of it (via ESPN).

“Please don't hire me to check a box. That's the worst thing you can do for me. Hire me because of my skill sets and coaching, who am I as a person, hire me for those.”

The 44-year-old Hammon is now in her eighth year as assistant coach to Spurs mentor Gregg Popovich. While she remains grateful, she has maintained through the years that she's not satisfied with being a deputy. But she also acknowledged getting a top coaching position in the NBA is extremely difficult, given the limited opportunities.

“There are 30 jobs, and they are incredibly hard to get. When I say there are 30 jobs, not all 30 are available, so I'm really talking about three or four, and they are really hard to get.”

Most recently, Hammon was reportedly a top candidate for the Portland Trail Blazers after parting ways with coach Terryn Stotts. She, however, lost the job to Chauncey Billups.

“I can't speak for organizations across the league and the whole sports world. I can tell you they were asking me legitimate coaching questions. When you get to this level, you've got to hire the best person for the job and the person who fits your organization the best.”

Becky Hammon's crusade endures.
