The San Antonio Spurs played their first game of the 2018-19 preseason on Sunday, resulting in a 104-100 victory over the Miami Heat. Though it was a tightly contested battle, Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich had several good things to say about his bench players after the game.

Popovich seemed to like what he saw from one lineup in particular: a group consisting of Patty Mills, Bryn Forbes, Jakob Poeltl, Marco Belinelli, and Davis Bertans.

“What did you like from your (second) unit?” a reporter asked Popovich during his postgame media availability.

“It's a unit that can score,” Popovich replied. “With Jakob in the post and shooters all around, it can be pretty interesting. We're blessed with some people who can put it in the basket, and we want to put them in situations where they can use those skills.”

Poeltl logged 19 minutes in Sunday's game, recording six points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field, a team-high 10 rebounds, and one steal. Belinelli saw 13 minutes of action, racking up nine points on 3-of-9 shooting (1-of-4 from beyond the arc), three assists, and one rebound. Mills, who finished with a plus-minus of plus-15, tallied four points and four assists in 12 minutes.

Exactly how much playing time this group will get in the coming season remains to be seen, but Popovich — one of the brightest minds in all of coaching — seems to like what he has seen thus far. If there is a lineup that works well together, Pop will continue using it.
