The past few days in the NBA have been filled with a number of skirmishes that have led to the league office issuing fines and suspensions to the players involved. While it could be a concerning issue for many, San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich gave a hilarious reaction to it recently.
The five-time champion coach was asked to give his take on the increased number of altercations lately. He did not waste time in letting the reporters surrounding him know that he thinks the players are acting tough, knowing that their teammates and referees are there to make sure an incident does not escalate further.
Gregg Popovich: "Oh, you mean those typical NBA fights where they go, 'Let me at him. I would've kicked his ass. Somebody hold me back.' The Houston Rockets and L.A. Clippers' game on Martin Luther King Jr. Day started the trend as a heated moment between Chris Paul and Blake Griffin set the tone for the rest of the game. Trevor Ariza was later ejected and it continued after the game when he went to the Clippers’ locker room to confront Austin Rivers.
On Tuesday, Arron Afflalo threw a haymaker to Minnesota Timberwolves forward Nemanja Bjelica before he was able to put him in a headlock. The scuffles did not end there as Michael Carter-Williams and Tim Frazier were also involved in one on Wednesday which got both players ejected late in the game.
Popovich may have given a hilarious reaction to it, but being the veteran that he is, the Spurs bench boss is surely not fond of seeing players fighting each other. The NBA may hand over heftier fines and longer suspensions to send a message to all that they do not tolerate these kinds of actions especially being role models to the youth.
