The previously reported meeting between San Antonio Spurs star Kawhi Leonard and head coach Gregg Popovich has yet to take place.
Despite Leonard, Popovich, and former franchise star Tim Duncan rumored to all be in New York City — the two parties have yet to meet, according to ESPN's Chris Haynes.
“Leonard has communicated with Spurs coach Gregg Popovich in recent days, sources say, but the two have yet to speak in person.
Popovich has been out of town all week attending to family business, sources told ESPN's Michael C. Wright. But he and Leonard have reached out to each other on numerous occasions in recent weeks.”
The fact that the two parties have not met yet gives the Spurs perhaps a second wind at trying to mend things with Kawhi Leonard and his camp, as they are under the impression that the situation is irreparable due to a betrayal in part of the organization.
Article Continues BelowWhile there should be a code red in Leonard's situation, who reportedly is interested in returning home and playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, the Spurs still have a shot to iron out their issues when Popovich and Leonard meet face to face.
Let's remember that LaMarcus Aldridge was on the verge of asking for a trade, but a meeting with Popovich changed it all, giving him a new outlook on his role and mending fences with the organization.
Other teams like the Philadelphia 76ers, the New York Knicks, the Boston Celtics, and the L.A. Clippers will throw their hat in for these Leonard sweepstakes — but it all rests on the Spurs to try and reel Leonard back in before this crosses the point of no return.
