Rudy Gay was one of the free agents who received a decent amount of interest from teams around the league this summer, but he ultimately chose to bring his talents to the San Antonio Spurs. It’s not hard to understand his decision as his new team is a very successful franchise and has always been making it to the playoffs.
When asked what he can offer to the Spurs, he admitted that he knows he’s only being seen as a scorer, but he vows to show more of his all around game starting next season. He then added, via Michael C. Wright of ESPN, that winning a championship is on top of his bucket list.
“I’ve been known to get buckets, and I’ve had that stigma of just being a scorer. But I think there’s a lot more to my game. I think I can show that here in San Antonio.”
You’re already in San Antonio spending time with the team. Got a bucket list on some of the things that you want to do in the city?
Gay: “Win a championship.”

Coming off an Achilles injury and still undergoing rehabilitation, the 30-year-old UConn product will have a chance to be slowly eased back to the game, and not be forced to take on a big role immediately. With Kawhi Leonard leading the charge, Gay can come off the bench first before increasing his minutes.
Head coach Gregg Popovich has made a name for himself for taking a cautious approach on his players who get injured, and that’s what's expected from him again on how he’ll deal with Gay. There is no doubt he is a very talented player, but the Spurs are looking for him to make an impact for them long-term, and will most likely wait until he’s fully recovered, until they maximize his usage. However, being competitive by nature, it won’t be surprising as well if Gay will ask to be used more soon, as he will certainly want to contribute to the team’s quest of winning another title.
