By now, most have seen the video of Joel Embiid playing at a playground in Philadelphia. Some players were trash talking him, so the Sixers big man bounced the ball off one of the kid's faces, and then went in for the monster dunk.

Even though it looks like it's just all fun and games, Embiid is actually risking a lot of money by playing in these pickup games. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer:

“The team’s president of basketball operations, Bryan Colangelo, declined to comment Tuesday. However, a team source acknowledged that Embiid would put himself at risk of having at least a portion of his five-year, $146 million contract extension voided if he suffers a serious injury that causes him to miss a substantial amount of time.”

The contract kicks in next season, and most of it is guaranteed, but there are some things written into the contract that protects the team if Embiid suffers a serious injury doing something that isn't team approved.

To make the contract fully guaranteed in terms of Embiid's play on the court he needs to play at least 1650 regular season minutes in three consecutive seasons. Last year he played a total of 1912 regular season minutes.

Embiid playing some pickup basketball on the streets of Philadelphia seems harmless, but with how easy Embiid suffers injuries, it's actually a really big risk.

The last thing that Joel Embiid or the Sixers want is for the superstar to suffer a serious injury, which in turn could void the contract.
