At the age of 22, many are fresh out of college and hunting for their first real job. Some are moving back in with their parents, while others are experiencing, for the first time, the “real world.” But not Donovan Mitchell. The 22-year-old is developing into an NBA superstar with the Utah Jazz. And now, he has a bridge named after him.
How many 22-year-olds can say that?
On Tuesday the Gateway 100 South Pedestrian Bridge, located near Utah's stadium, was officially dedicated to Mitchell. The team behind the bridge officially unveiled a new mural on the face of the bridge depicting the shooting guard as well. Mitchell spoke at the event, thanking his fans, teammates, and coaches. I didn't expect to be in the NBA, let alone win the dunk contest, let alone make the playoffs, let alone be where we are today in our playoff position and have a bridge named after me. Like, I still can't comprehend that.
“…This is so incredible and I gotta say, thank you guys so much, and it's going to be a fun two months. Three months – we're playing into June, so it'll be a lot of fun. Appreciate it.”
In only his second NBA season, Mitchell has become a fan favorite. Drafted 13th overall out of the University of Louisville, he grabbed a starting role almost immediately and never looked back. This season, he is averaging 23.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists while shooting 42.9%.
Mitchell has been a significant part of Utah's success this season. At 44-30, the team holds the fifth seed in the Western Conference. This will be their third consecutive playoff appearance.
