As part of a recently penned article for The Undefeated, Washington Wizards star Bradley Beal made it clear that he would like to finish his career in D.C.
Simply put, Beal is beloved in the D.C. area. The former No. 3 overall pick has been with the Wizards since they drafted him in 2012. He has heard his name tossed about in several trade scenarios, yet he has remained with the team, signing a two-year extension worth nearly $72 million in October.
Beal admitted he “could've left” in his essay for The Undefeated, but he has stayed strong. Beal is currently enjoying the best season of his career. He's currently the NBA’s second-leading scorer, averaging 30.4 points per game. Loads of teams would love to have him on their roster, but he says he'd like to have his jersey retired in Washington:
“Wanting to have my jersey retired in Washington one day played a factor in me re-signing. Every night we walk into that arena, there’s five names up there. Those are some of the five greatest to ever touch a basketball. To be on pace to breaking the records that I am now and to be here for eight years already, that’s special. And coming into the prime of my career, you don’t know how much longer you have.
“For me, I look at Kobe [Bryant], I look at D-Wade [Dwyane Wade], I look at Dirk [Nowitzki], U.D. [Udonis Haslem], how they can stay in one situation for a long time,” Beal added.
“I hate change. If it happens, it happens. But if I can control it, I will finish in D.C.”
At 22-39 overall, the Wizards are currently the ninth-ranked team in the Eastern Conference standings. Beal, who has now scored 25 or more points in 19 straight games, is doing everything he can to lead his team to the postseason.
