John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins have a relationship that stretches back to their college days at Kentucky. The Washington Wizards guard and Golden State Warriors center discussed a reunion this offseason, but the two felt that the timing was not right. Wall told Ben Standig of The Sports Capitol:

“At the time I [thought] we needed a center who could play right [away],” Wall told The Sports Capitol about his free agency talks with Cousins. “Nine times out of 10 [Cousins] is not going to be ready at the beginning of the season. I think we need a guy who can be a starting center right now.”

If Wall and the Wizards want a starting center from day one, Cousins was obviously not the guy. But is Dwight Howard from day one a better option than Boogie Cousins from whenever he gets back? Of course not.

The Wizards have the luxury of playing in the Eastern Conference. They can tread water for long enough to hang around the playoff picture with the squad they had in place. Once Cousins becomes healthy, the Wizards would be dangerous in the East.

Washington obviously wanted to go in a different direction, but it doesn't make much sense considering the fact that Cousins was willing to sign a one-year prove-it deal this season. Who knows whether or not he would have chosen the Wizards if they extended an offer, but if the front office decided that Dwight Howard was the better option, then something is wrong.
