Duke Blue Devils guard (and Draymond Green-wannabe) Grayson Allen is back for one more year in Durham, and as one of the most experienced members of the team, the program has bestowed upon him the squad’s captaincy. This according to a story by Seth Davis of The Athletic.
Notwithstanding his sideline meltdowns and occasional tripping last season, Grayson Allen was granted the honor heading into what will be his final season with the Blue Devils.
Allen was the Blue Devils’ third-leading scorer last season behind Luke Kennard and Jayson Tatum. With both Kennard and Tatum now in the pros, the burden gets heavier for Allen, who put up 14.5 points per game during the 2016-17 campaign.
A crop of blue chip talent will be entering the fold as well, making Allen's leadership rather important when the season begins.
Article Continues BelowWe don’t have the stats to back it up, but we’re assuming that not many players who had repeatedly been caught tripping opponents in the past was named captain the next year. What’s even more unique in Grayson’s case is that he also served as captain for the Blue Devils last season but was stripped of it after – yes you guessed it – tripping an opponent in a December game against the Elon Phoenix.
Apart from losing the captaincy, he was also suspended indefinitely because of it by head coach Mike Krzyzewski, a penalty that lasted just one game.
Allen and Duke’s focus, however, is on basketball and not on issues of the past, as the Blue Devils look to bounce back after getting tripped by the South Carolina Gamecocks in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament.
