Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver Jameson Williams had the misfortune of suffering an injury just when his team needed him the most. Williams was taken off the field in the second quarter of the 2022 College Football Playoff Championship Game against the Georgia Bulldogs Monday night he hurt his knee. Williams wanted to get back on the field and help his team in the second half, but Alabama's medical team prevented the junior from re-entering the contest, according to Nick Saban (via Mark Schlabach of ESPN).

Saban said Williams wanted to return to the game in the second half, but that Alabama's medical staff would not allow him to, “which I think is smart because he has a future as a football player.”

Alabama's receiving corps had been operating without one of its top threats even before Williams went down, as the Crimson Tide entered the game without John Metchie III due to a knee injury. With Williams essentially ruled out for the rest of the game, Bryce Young played without his two most reliable weapons downfield for the entire second half. Williams finished the regular season with no. 1 on the team with 1,572 receiving yards, while Metchie had 1,142.

As bitter as it might have felt for Williams to not see his team struggle on offense with him on the sidelines, Alabama's staff might have just helped him from aggravating an injury that could hurt his NFL stock.
