After being one of the favorites to win the 2022 NBA title, the Brooklyn Nets are out of the postseason tournament. Kevin Durant and company were eliminated in a shocking first-round sweep courtesy of the Boston Celtics.

As the Nets enter the offseason, many wonder what will happen with Ben Simmons. The guard has yet to play for Brooklyn even after he was expected to make his season debut in Game 4. So, why didn't he play in an attempt to keep the Nets' playoff hopes alive? And, why wasn't he courtside?

The 25-year-old told Nets officials that his back was sore Sunday night, pulling himself from his long-awaited debut, per Shams Charania of The Athletic. The ailment also explains why he wasn't courtside rooting for his team to start a series comeback.

According to Charania's article, Simmons' announcement “triggered frustration and disheartenment throughout the organization.”

It also led to a meeting on Monday between Nets franchise officials, Simmons and his agent, and Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul. Charania's sources say that Simmons told those in the meeting that “a mental block” is in his way. He said that the issue is creating stress that could be triggering his ongoing back problems.

He partially attributed his 2021 postseason experience with the Philadelphia 76ers for his ongoing mental health problems.

Simmons also said that he wants to play basketball for Brooklyn while he hatches out his personal obstacles. His word was enough validation for the franchise officials. They said that they are willing to work with him and provide him with whatever he needs.
