Brooklyn Nets point guard D'Angelo Russell says the contract extensions head coach Kenny Atkinson and his assistant coaches reportedly got are “well-deserved.”

Atkinson had led the Nets to 39 wins entering Tuesday. Brooklyn is on its way to making the playoffs for the first time since 2015:

Russell made the All-Star team this year for the first time in his career. The lefty has developed a good rapport with Kenny Atkinson, who lets Russell play with freedom and through his mistakes.

DLo is averaging 21.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game this season for the Nets while shooting 43.1 percent from the field, 36.0 percent from beyond the arc and 77.7 percent from the free-throw line. The former No. 2 overall pick becomes a restricted free agent this summer, but all signs point toward Russell and Brooklyn coming to terms on a long-term extension.

The Nets won just 48 games in Atkinson's first two years as head coach. But everyone who was covering the team could sense that the culture was being changed from the inside.

Now that Atkinson has more talent on the roster, the Nets are starting to play like a good, fundamental team. Brooklyn is definitely a club no one wants to see in the playoffs.
