The Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics are preparing for a rematch of last year's first round playoff series in the 2022 installment of the NBA Playoffs. One of the main storylines ahead of the series, aside from Nets star Kyrie Irving's continued beef with Celtics fans, is the status of Ben Simmons. Simmons, who has yet to take the court this season, reportedly has a chance to return at some point in the series against Boston. However, his status has been hanging over the Nets like a dark cloud ever since he was acquired at the trade deadline. After Nets head coach Steve Nash informed reporters that Simmons was unable to do anything noteworthy in practice, Irving was asked about Simmons, and the Nets star delivered an honest answer, per Kristian Winfield of the New York Daily News.
Irving said that the Nets “don't have any expectations of Simmons.” The only thing Brooklyn wants for the former Philadelphia 76ers guard is to get healthy. Like Irving said, if that occurs during their 2022 NBA Playoff series against the Celtics, then that just makes the team more imposing.
It's clear that Brooklyn believes they have enough firepower to defeat the Celtics without Simmons. Otherwise, the Nets would be rushing him back for the series.
Instead, Irving and Brooklyn will continue to be patient with him.
